Greetings! this is a wonderful idea and I look forward to the dialogue. I have promoted the constructive engagement of women in family business for decades and hope that this forum will encourage women to take their place at the table!

My specialty is in Hispanics and Latin America women, What is their underlying power in their family business? Most of them are of a high entrepreneurial spirit and I am fascinated about the new generation seeing more women as successors of their family businesses.

In honor of Marilena bringing our attention back to family business women, I thought I would share one of the poems I have written.  I write one to capture the theme of the Women in Family Business Program that I conduct each year.  This was for 2001:

Her Story

The story of our lives

Begins even before our awareness.

A dream occurs

And our lives are about making that dream happen.

It starts with our awakening to what is possible

Which can happen at 5

at l0    at l5   at 21

it can also occur when we are 30

40 50 60 70 or 80.

And sometimes we awaken to the dream over and over again.

The key is to wake up

to smell the aroma of the world

to feel the texture of earth and the motion of the sea

to hear the sound of potential

and  to taste the sweetness of your own personal brand of success.

To learn and

learn again

about the paths that are available

the curious trails on which we can trod

the seas we can sail

the corners we can explore

and the underground caverns which have gems for us to find.

And although at times we become weary

with a nurturing rest

we can again pick up the trail

find a star to follow

and continue the journey.

For the dream continues to unfold

throughout our lives

and leads us into new facets of our lives So long as we continue to be open

to the adventure

of life.....

I do agree with Marilena's point. I believe that culture certainly plays a role in the topic- women in family business. Reviewing Campden FB 50th edition, “40 under forty rising stars in family business” shows that 25 percent are female (10 out of 40). However, none of these female successors are from Asian family businesses. This statistics might tell us something here. Are female successors in Asian family businesses less likely to be encouraged to take over the business compared to those in western family businesses?
