Family Owned Businesses Pursued by Large Firms

It's in the headlines every day: A venerable family firm sells to a larger firm. Successful family businesses are being increasingly sought-after by large corporations. While some businesses

would invite such wooing, many family businesses are in business for more than

just a financial return. Some are concerned about their legacy and that of

their family, many are sentimental about the…

Great Christmas gift ideas for mom and dad and your family business.

You love your mom and dad. They gave birth to you, raised you with an entrepreneurial spirit and have created or sustained your family business with the hope that one day you might take it over. The flight of youth and fighting "brain drain"; is LeBron any different?

Tonight marks the biggest game of the NBA season so far. Admittedly, I am not a huge NBA fan, but I do enjoy the drama of certain games and this one has it all. LeBron, returning home to Cleveland, after fleeing the city of his youth. Cleveland, a hard scrabble rust-belt town, came so close to finally securing a championship for their beleaguered city with LeBron, but he succumbed to the temptation that so many youth fall to and left for his big career (read: championship) opportunity and… Continue

Good Big Sister vs. Good Helper -- A Story for Women in Family Enterprise

When my now five-year-old daughter, Molly, was two, I was expecting twin boys. The pediatrician, who had a strong commitment to understanding psychology as much as pediatric medicine, gave me advice that changed my personal, parenting, and professional perspectives.

The doctor suggested that when the boys are part of the family, I give my daughter the role of a good helper rather than call her a good big sister. His experience was that the messenger and…
